NEW YORK<\/strong> \u2014 Prime Minister Balendra Shah has proposed the establishment of a Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism<\/strong> led jointly by Nepal, India and China, highlighting the urgent need for regional cooperation to address the growing impacts of climate change in the Himalayan region.<\/p>\n

Addressing the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday, Shah said the Hindu Kush Himalayan region is intrinsically linked to the water security, ecosystems, agriculture and livelihoods of nearly two billion people, making it a vital component of the Earth’s life-support system.<\/p>\n

Under the proposed mechanism, the three countries would cooperate in sharing satellite data and technical expertise, monitoring potentially dangerous glacial lakes, strengthening joint early warning systems, and coordinating cross-border assistance during disasters.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Shah stressed that the Himalayas should not be viewed as a boundary of fragmented information but as a laboratory for international cooperation. He noted that Nepal plays a global role that exceeds its ecological footprint and informed the Assembly that forests have been restored across nearly half of the country’s territory.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister said Nepal is advancing hydropower development to meet its clean energy needs, expanding the use of electric vehicles, and strengthening climate adaptation initiatives at the local level. He also reaffirmed Nepal\u2019s commitment to enhancing preparedness in the face of increasing climate-related disasters.<\/p>\n

Referring to the devastating floods that struck Nepal\u2019s Himalayan region a month ago, Shah said the disaster was not merely a tragedy confined to Nepal but a warning to the entire world about the escalating risks posed by climate change.<\/p>\n
