SAARC summit only after removing ‘artificial barriers’: Pakistan

1 min read

Islamabad Pakistan has agreed to convene a summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) only if the “artificial barrier” is removed.

This was stated in a statement issued by Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mohammad Qureshi after his meeting with SAARC Secretary General Esla Ruwan Birakkun.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Qureshi said that Pakistan had strong support for SAARC and urged for speedy implementation of the SAARC process.

However, he said that the artificial barriers on the way to the conference should be removed. Since the 18th SAARC Summit was held in Kathmandu in 2014, Nepal has not been able to play a dynamic role as the SAARC chair country.
