Kathmandu. Today is the 30th of December. The Gurung community is celebrating ‘Tamu Lhosar’. It is customary to celebrate Lhosar to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new year.

Since ‘Lho’ means year and ‘Saar’ means change, the day of change of year is called ‘Tamu Lhosar’. The Gurung community celebrates Tamu Lhosar as the New Year.

It is said that the significance of this festival is due to the fact that the night of December 30 is the longest night and the following nights are getting shorter. On the occasion of the festival, the government has given a public holiday across the country today.
Leaders of political parties including President Vidyadevi Bhandari, Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba have expressed their best wishes on the occasion.
